An individual made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the event.

Sudden Shift in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, an online prediction market, that NicolĂ¡s Maduro would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the time leading up to Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the president had been seized.

A single trader, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a modest bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Trading information shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

But the market's assessment had climbed to over 10% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the early hours of the next day, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity just before the public announcement was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," commented an industry expert.

Several of other individuals also earned large payouts from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Emerges

Politicians are starting to take note.

A bill introduced on Monday seeks to ban government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a market.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to predict everything from sports to political events.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Insider trading is illegal in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the prediction market industry.

A spokesperson for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against such activities of any form."
