Australia's captain Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he's going to play a key capacity. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand last month after medical tests showed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Backup Options

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against the Asian giants as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "small issue and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
