The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
