An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential threats posed by Chinese-made cars, while staff have been advised to refrain from discussing secret information in any cars.
Safety Advice for Defence Personnel
During a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been instructed not to talk about secret information while travelling in Chinese cars.
He stated that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.
We have a fleet of thousands of vehicles in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles represent a very small number.
But whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our staff is not to plug Ministry of Defence technology into their car, to avoid having discussions at a secret classification in any vehicle, due to the growing risks of surveillance that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and sensible thing for everyone worried about security.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using all cars from China, the minister responded: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the present time.”
Wider Defence Context
This revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of multi-purpose shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable China to disable buses and bring disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russia spy ship has been directing laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” action by government representatives.
The wider defence environment underscores the importance of robust protocols and caution in all aspects of official operations, from transport use to communication habits.
