Nepal's Political Scene Sees Major Partnership Formed Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable move ahead of next year's general election, a pair of high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which led to significant loss of life.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane after the deal was finalized.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of systemic political corruption.

Details of the New Political Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with several leading political figures. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a free and fair election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
