No Fewer Than Six Perish in Crowd Crush at Ghanaian Armed Forces Enlistment Drive

No fewer than six individuals have died during a crowd crush at a military recruitment event held in a sports arena in Ghana.

The midweek "tragic" event seems to have been triggered by "an unexpected surge of applicants who breached security protocols and stormed the gates," announced a release from Ghana's armed forces.

22 additional individuals were hurt, including 5 who are in critical condition.

A large crowd had gathered at the El-Wak sports venue, in the capital, the capital, with the aspiration of joining the military.

Ghana has a youth unemployment rate of approximately thirty-two percent, the most recent government statistics show, and such enlistment drives typically attract massive gatherings and often lead to chaotic scenes.

The closing date to submit applications for this event was prolonged for a seven days to allow for additional candidates, as a number had experienced challenges in the application procedure.

Military representative Capt Veronica Adzo Arhin stated the crush occurred ahead of the planned commencement time of 06:20 GMT.

Ghana's President President John Mahama has gone to see the wounded in hospital.

Order has been restored, and the recruitment exercise has since started.
