Officials in Tasmania are working to identify a pink slime that has appeared on a remote shoreline, with some scientists concerned it could be an algal bloom.
The pink-tinged sludge appeared along a section of a coastal area about 60 kilometers south of the city. A like substance has also been documented on areas of Little Roaring Beach and a separate bay.
Specimens have been gathered and submitted to the regulatory body for analysis. A spokesperson remarked that "algae outbreaks are a natural occurrence in reaction to changes in nutrients, warmth, rain or illumination".
"These blooms are sometimes called reddish tides because the blooms can change the water reddish," the official noted. "Only some algal blooms are dangerous, with many species functioning as a major source of food for creatures in the aquatic ecosystem."
"The most common cause of reddish water in these seas is the sea plant Noctiluca scintillans, which can create glowing light shows at night."
Algae outbreaks happen naturally but their occurrence has grown in the past few years, partially due to climate change and environmental waste that combine to create mineral-filled seas geared for the fast proliferation of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that typically act as the ocean's waste processors. During a outbreak, there is a rapid growth in their colonies that disturbs the healthy balance of aquatic systems.
These events have been compared to marine infernos and can keep expanding as long as the environment is suitable. In severe cases, vulnerable aquatic environments can be wiped out as marine life is killed or deprived of oxygen, offering more food for the proliferation.
Another region in the past grappled with a devastating algae outbreak along its southern shore after a series of sea temperature spikes, which extended across a vast area. The event left swimmers with irritated eyes and hacking coughs and may have killed up to 250,000 marine animals across hundreds of species, according to government calculations.
An estuarine ecologist, who assisted in examining the beginning of that algal bloom stated, based on pictures of the Tasmanian outbreak, the likely culprit involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a type of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"There have been numerous of these outbreaks around Tassie of late," she added.
The scientist stated sea sparkle did not generate harmful substances like the organism involved in that harmful event, but it does eat microscopic animals and "lots of fish eggs", meaning marine life were particularly vulnerable.
"Typically one notices a outbreak of sea sparkle after a bloom of a different species, or an event such as a fish reproduction," she added.
A marine scientist, who gathered specimens of the rosy slime in Tasmania, stated it looked like the suspected bloom had "increased notably" and indicated the aquaculture sector was the most likely culprit, referring to like situations elsewhere.
"So we needs to deliver a clear message here, the officials and the regulators need to respond to this. We need to study the samples we've taken and we need to inform the people here," she said.
The scientist said she had concerns for public safety after feeling a prickling feeling along her body while being exposed with affected seawater.
An advocacy organization has documented dead octopus and expired organisms washing ashore, with a longtime environmental campaigner labeling the circumstances as an "environmental emergency" and calling on the local leader to see and "assume command the reaction that government must be undertaking".
"He needs to know this is a crisis in the unfolding, commercially as well as for nature."
Speaking to journalists, the premier commented he was not aware of any relationships between the algae outbreak and the aquaculture sector, emphasizing expert examination was required before determinations could be reached.
